90% of internet users are using the Windows OS so we'll start with simple instructions based on that platform for now. We'll keep this simple and to the point, learning about security is not easy, the purpose of this mini tutorial is to help the new user as well as the user who has no time to spend becoming a security expert.
- (1) Bookmark, and print this page.
- (2) Do you have antivirus software?
If you do, make sure it is a version that was released less than two years ago, if not either upgrade or keep reading. Also make sure that your antivirus software updates virus definitions automatically, make sure the subscription for those updates has not expired or you will need to pay and extend it. If you do not have AV or don't want to pay for new subscriptions, you can get antivirus software for free.
- (3) First uninstall any old versions of antivirus software currently installed on your computer.
- (4) Then download a free and fresh copy of avast! 4 Home Edition and install it.
- (5) At this point your computer is protected from most viruses trojans and spyware, but you still need to do a full scan of your computer before you can be sure nothing was installed before. So fire it up and do a full scan now.
- (6) Now that you're done with that, and since no single application is currently foolproof, a layered defense provides the most complete protection, so download a free copy of
SpyBot Search & Destroy, or
Microsoft Windows Defender, or ThreatFire by PC Tools and install it.
- (7) Done that? Great! Now you're on a roll, you're almost done having total, well as much as possible anyway, protection. One more step and you're all done.
- (8) Firewall it, if you don't know what it is, never mind, just read, do you have Windows XP/Vista? if yes chances are you are already protected with the default firewall, check this though, nothing is for sure, go to your control panel and open the "Windows Firewall" icon, and be sure the firewall is running, if not well make it so.
If you're on Win98/ME/SE/NT or whatever else that doesn't come with a firewall, download a free copy of
SoftPerfect Personal Firewall, install it, and you're done.
- (9) Now that you're all protected, bookmark this site if you haven't done so already, once in a blue moon, come by and check what's new on the security front, it's a never ending war, don't get caught without ammo!
